My Profile
Dear Parents and Students,
My name is Annette Koerten and I’ve been working at Shorewood Intermediate School as a French Teacher since 2013.
I am originally from France and have been living in the United States for the past sixteen years. I was born in Martinique, a French island in the Caribbean and lived there until I was 4 years old. Throughout my childhood my family and I moved numerous times but for the most part in different regions of France such as Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Angers, and Fréjus. My father was a band conductor in the French Army so we were stationed in a new city every few years. Besides living in France I also lived 2 years in Djibouti (East Africa) and 3 years in Reunion. (French Island in the Indian Ocean next to Madagascar) My life taught me so much about this wonderful world we live in and the different cultures that inhabit it. I enjoy sharing my experiences with my students to broaden their conceptions of our world.
Learning a foreign language is not just learning a set of words and verbs but it is also understanding another culture and having a better understanding of your own culture.
So this coming year we are going to embrace all this, and enjoy learning the French language and culture.
I have been teaching in public school for 9 years now. I graduated from U.W. Milwaukee with a B.S. in Education and French. After I received my diploma I worked at Shorewood High School as a long-term sub for Christine Jacquart in Spring of 2008. For the next 4 years (2008 -2012) I was the French Teacher at Oconomowoc High School. Then I taught both Middle and High school French for the Greendale School District. This is my 6th year teaching at SIS and it is an absolute joy. I am also a IB certified (International Baccalaureate) teacher.
My goal with my classes is to work on the fluency level since the reason why people study a world language is to be able to communicate effectively in that language and this is my objective. So to do so throughout the year we will have activities such as reading, writing, listening and speaking that will contribute to reaching that goal.
Here are some examples of the projects I have done with my students in the past: Do a play, create a family album, do skits, design a cartoon strip, make a song, write a short storybook. Besides these great projects we will also play several games. From time to time I bring in French cuisine for the students to try such as crêpes, ratatouille, and Gâlette des Rois. (three kings pie)
I very much enjoy computer technology so I incorporate it into my everyday lessons to the students. I use a lot of Internet video/content such as French Newscasts and cultural videos, as part of my instruction. I feel that technology when used properly can be a very useful tool in learning a foreign language and culture.
I look forward to meeting all of you this coming school year.
Sincerely,
Madame Koerten
